Short Story 3 – Masters of the Universe

When you think about the 1980s, do people and things like MTV, Madonna, Prince and Members Only jackets come to mind? While these were all staples of the decade, they aren’t what host Deirdre Pippins is most enamored by. Instead, she is most drawn to 1980s literature, particularly novels by Tom Wolfe, who has been lauded as a literary legend of the 20th century.

Summer Beach Reads - Episode 4

The official start of summer is right around the corner, and you know that that means...time to finalize your 2021 summer reading list! If you’re not sure where to start, Deirdre Pippins has created a list of six engaging and dynamic beach reads that you can add to your summer roster.

Here’s a sneak peek into the six novels Deirdre has selected!

1. A Low Country Bride by Preslaysa Williams (2:35-6:43): While romance may be Deirdre’s least favorite genre, this novel introduces several topics that she hopes will bring readers more maturity and depth than your typical love story.

2. While Justice Sleeps by Stacey Abrams (6:44-10:15): This legal thriller written by celebrated national leader and bestselling author Stacey Abrams is fast-paced and full of twists and turns. You won’t want to miss it!

3. The Other Black Girl by Zakiya Dalila Harris (10:16-14:58): This novel is Deirdre’s number one pick for this summer’s list of reads. From racist behavior in the workplace to coping with microaggressions to the exhaustion of being black in predominantly white spaces, this dynamic book will keep you on the edge of your seat.

4. How to Kidnap the Rich by Rahul Raina (15:08-18:18): A crime story, love story and social satire all rolled into one, this novel explores the glaring inequalities that still persist in modern-day Delhi. 

5. Island Queen by Vanessa Riley (18:19-20:57): This historical fiction novel (Deirdre’s favorite genre!) is based on the true life story of Dorothy Kirwan Thomas, a black woman in the colonial West Indies who broke free of slavery to become a powerful and wealthy landowner. 

6. Summer on the Bluffs by Sunny Hostin (20:58-27:04): Written by Sunny Hostin, co-host of The View, this novel details a life-changing summer on Oak Bluffs, the most exclusive black beach community in the country where Michelle and Barack Obama recently purchased a home.

Short Story 2 – 1960s Reading Playlist

Overview
Host Deirdre Pippins is a huge fan of the 1960s. From the TV shows (shoutout to Bewitched and Hazel!) to the music to historical fiction books based on the 1960s, she simply can’t get enough of this transformative decade!

2021 Reading Challenge REVEALED! - Episode 3

Overview
In this episode of Bookaholic, Host Deirdre Pippins reveals her 2021 reading list! This year, she has chosen to continue with the theme of authors of the African Diaspora. Deirdre encourages listeners of all walks of life, regardless of race and cultural background, to take a stab at some of these novels. As we aspire to become a more inclusive and equitable society, it is crucial to read books about one another as a first point of understanding.

From legends like Toni Morrison and James Baldwin to unsung legends like Wallace Thurman and Ann Petry to emerging legends like Yaa Gyasi and Sadeqa Johnson, Deirdre’s 2021 reading list presents a comprehensive deep dive into the Black experience in America and beyond. Short Story 1 – Tsundoku

Overview
As you might guess, host Deirdre Pippins has always been a big fan of Jeopardy. Her voracious appetite for reading has given her a leg-up on the competition when it comes to trivia!

She was also always a big fan of Alex Trebek, so she was especially saddened to learn he had been diagnosed with cancer and ultimately passed away. She made it a point to tune into his last episode on January 8, 2021 and was pleasantly surprised to learn about a new word from one of the contestants.

The man admitted that he suffers from tsundoku, a Japanese word that the contestant defined as, “Having far more books on your bookshelf than you will ever be able to read.” As a self-proclaimed reading junkie herself, Deirdre felt an immediate connection to both Alex Trebek and the contestant that has stuck with her to this day.
