PEN America has uncovered a disturbing trend in our latest findings: more than 10,000 instances of book bans in U.S. public schools during the 2023-2024 school year, nearly tripling last year's number. These bans predominantly target stories about LGBTQ+ characters, people of color, and books addressing women's sexual experiences or sexual abuse. With this surge driven by new state laws and "parental rights" advocacy groups, PEN America is raising urgent alarms about the chilling impact on students' freedom to read.
